This is only the second vintage—they couldn't produce it in 2016 since the vineyard was basically destroyed by a terrible hailstorm that even killed some 12% of the plants in the summer that year. This is going to be a reference in Ribeira Sacra, a clear indication of how the blend of grapes can provide an extra dimension. 3,500 bottles produced. They used 65% full clusters in 2017 and a shorter maceration than in other years, perhaps because the very short growing season (the grapes were harvested earlier than ever) delivered less ripe seeds and stems, so that a longer maceration would have extracted harsher tannins. The dry and warm year was saved by some rain just before the harvest that allowed the grapes to develop flavors and aromas, because they were not present before. The result is very impressive. This is always the most elegant from the single-plot bottlings; the extremely old vineyard seems to provide an extra degree of nuance, and the grapes are nicely balanced, maintaining the acidity to provide the wine with freshness. 2017 is a warm year with powerful wines, a little in the style of 2015, but I see a tad more elegance and better balance here. There is power and concentration, with ripeness that is not noticed (there's 14% alcohol). It has plenty of fine-grained tannins that would benefit from some time in bottle. It should develop effortlessly for a decade. This is from a south-facing plot on mainly schist soils (but there's also a little granite), and it was fermented with 100% full clusters, which usually lends to a more powerful wine. In 2017, the character of the vineyard clearly comes through. It's always a wine that takes longer than Capeliños to open up. They have been fine-tuning these single-plot wines, especially after 2013; they've been harvesting earlier, trying to get more freshness and improve the drinkability of the wines. This is still extremely young, primary and undeveloped and should blossom with one more year in bottle, but it's not harsh at all and could be enjoyed young with powerful food. This wine wants to be the expression of the village, a 'village' wine selected from the red soils of the different vineyards. The varietal breakup is approximately 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 5% each of the whites Viura and Malvasía Riojana, which Oliván usually calls Alarije (its original name in Extremadura). It fermented in a combination of open top, stainless steel and PVC vats with indigenous yeasts (like all the wines here), with malolactic in barrel, where the wine matured for ten months. The wine took a little bit of time to take off; it is very tight and powerful, but deep. The palate is medium-bodied with round tannins and a polished mouthfeel. 7,840 bottles produced. The grapes were partly destemmed and fermented in cement and PVC vats, then aged in a combination of cement and chestnut wood foudres for five months. It has an impactful label of his great grandfather (in 2014 it was his grandfather), and an even more impactful nose, very exuberant, very open and aromatic. The grapes are sourced from the red soils in the vineyards, where the wines tend to display a more fruit-driven nose. I think 2015 could be a very good vintage for young reds, with wines that are very drinkable and forward, perhaps for consumption in the short term. Here the palate shows delicious flavors of juicy blackberries and licorice, round and lush but with sharp, austere tannins. These small plots tend to be fermented in 1,000-kilo, open PVC bins; in this case, the Viura was not destemmed, but the Tempranillo was. It matured in second-use French barriques for nine months without being racked. Incredibly enough, the wine has one degree less alcohol than the other single vineyard bottlings, simply because of the high volume of white grapes. If it wasn't for the white grapes, it could probably have been too warm, which makes you wonder if that's the reason why the vineyard was already planted like that. There is ripeness and the fruit is black rather than red. The palate shows more freshness and better balance, with deep flavors and elegant tannins. The palate is much better than the nose, so it will probably grow in bottle. 1,340 bottles produced. They also did a stricter selection of grapes which resulted in smaller volumes, less extraction and in general, in the last few years they have introduced subtle changes to achieve more freshness and elegance in their wines. The varietal breakup varies with the vintage and in this exceptionally warm 2011 it was 50% Monastrell, 20% Garnacha Tintorera and 10% each Syrah, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with malolactic in barrel and an élevage of one year in 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels followed by a further year in clay amphorae before bottling. There is a much softer impact from the élevage and better integration of the oak, there are some notes of cereals intermixed with some minty aromas and echoes of berries without any excess of ripeness, combining Mediterranean hints with a Bordeaux accent. The palate is much better balanced, there are finer tannins and fresher acidity, keeping the profile of a powerful wine with balance and elegance, with a completely different texture, the dustiness has disappeared and the alcohol is not noticeable. The Cuvée N combines the ethereal character with the complexity, depth and backbone I found in the single-vineyard bottling from this very complete vintage. It doesn’t reach the finesse of the Pie Franco, but it surpasses the Las Gravas. There are notes of Mediterranean herbs with an earthy touch and the elegant rusticity the best Monastrell is capable of. This will not be a one-off, they are hoping to bottle it again in 2017, as they will only make it in Mediterranean vintages.
