“The 2014 Escondite del Ardacho Las Guillermas is a Tempranillo-based blend with 30% white Viura, coming from a 0.62 hectare vineyard that was planted 65 years ago on deep gravel soils. These small plots tend to be fermented in 1,000-kilo, open PVC bins; in this case, the Viura was not destemmed, but the Tempranillo was. It matured in second-use French barriques for nine months without being racked. Incredibly enough, the wine has one degree less alcohol than the other single vineyard bottlings, simply because of the high volume of white grapes. If it wasn't for the white grapes, it could probably have been too warm, which makes you wonder if that's the reason why the vineyard was already planted like that. There is ripeness and the fruit is black rather than red. The palate shows more freshness and better balance, with deep flavors and elegant tannins. The palate is much better than the nose, so it will probably grow in bottle. 1,340 bottles produced. It was bottled in late June 2015.

I went to Viñaspre to visit some of Roberto Oliván's vineyards to get a better understanding of his wines. He works a myriad of tiny plots with very old vines, some of which are almost dying and many plants are missing, so yields are tiny. Truly handcrafted terroir wines.“
